COLOURS -commonwealth essay 2006-

Colours are a major part of many things in this world. Colours affect the way people look at things, it affects peoples’ moods and it is even used to describe the moods of people such as Monday blues. Colours are powerful elements in life. It has the ability to affect us in a huge way without ourselves even knowing! It can either spoil your day entire day or on the other hand, make your day. This is the unknown power of colours. Many people have failed to realize the influence colours on us. Whenever we wake up in the morning and see the gloomy dark grey clouds looming in the sky, we start to feel a little ‘grey’ inside as well and somehow we feel that the day ahead is not going to be a good one due to the dark grey clouds making us dread the day’s activities. However, if we wake up in the morning, greeted with the wide smile of the bright shining crimson sun ,it is almost impossible to deny the fact that life is beautiful. Same time, same activities, what makes the difference? It is the power of colours has on us. Colours play an important role in lives, including mine. To me, certain colours paint my life and have an important significance in my life.

Some colours represent many things as time passes. One example is the colour black. In the past or even until now, some believe that black is an unlucky colour which brings misfortunes. From past to present, black has rarely been a colour associated to something positive and often related to negative things such as a 'black face' seen on someone's face, which often spells troubles. Looking in detail, I realize that black is almost always a symbol of something bad and unfavourable. Similarly, black represents the bad things of my life, my past, filled with all past, present and future sins of mine that were as black as it could possibly be. I used to live in darkness, for I as a sinner hated the light, where God's truth is and continued to hide in darkness then, till one day my sins as black as could be were brought to the light of God's truth and there was no more hiding for me. That was my past.

Red, a colour that has the ability to brighten up people's day. Unlike black, red is often associated to something auspicious and many eyes sparkle at the sight of the colour red, especially during Chinese New Year as that means receiving red packets! Every child loves Chinese New Year because of the new clothes, new year goodies and not forgetting the red packets! However, there is something else that is closely related to the colour red as well, which is blood. Some faint at the sight of blood while others rejoice seeing the amount of blood available. To me, red does remind me of Chinese New Year and red packets as well as blood, which represents life. However, more importantly, red brings to my mind the best of the best red packet or present one can ever receive Jesus Christ and the blood that was shed by Jesus Christ, not only giving life but giving it more abundantly. Red also represents passion and love to many. To me, love between husband and wife, parents and child is great but the greatest love of all is God's love towards man. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believe in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. God sent His son not to condemn the world but to save it from eternal condemnation. Jesus, the Son of God came down as a man with human flesh, took the world’s sins on His very own body at the cross. He was scorned, mocked, beaten, whipped and crucified for the world, including me, someone who disobeyed Him all my life. Blood, as real and red as any human's blood flowed out from the Son of God. It was for the world, it was for me. There is no greater love than a man who lay down his life for his friend.

Green often paints a picture of serenity and tranquility. Green is most often the colours of trees in parks, jungles and forests, It is the therefore the colour of nature, it represents peace and calmness. This feature of the colour green is even applied to medical science where surgeons wear green clothing when performing a surgery, hoping to bring across a sense of calmness and peace to the patients. Similarly, God offers peace to His children but in a different way. The sense of peace brought about by trees are temporal as trees can die or get chopped down and the sense of peace given to the patients only last till the end of the surgery. However, God's peace towards His children is everlasting, peace that will last no matter what happens. We can always know that His is there, always in control and that we can always trust in Him. Peace, He leaves with us, peace He has given, not as the world gives but as God gives that out heart will not be troubled or afraid.

Lastly, the colour of gold. In this world, many people associate gold with money, jewelry or even gold bars. Therefore, the mention of gold will often brighten up many eyes. Many in this world slog day and night, working hard and long in order to attain financial stability or become increasingly richer. In a way, they hope for a golden future, with sufficient or abundant amount of money. Similarly, gold is the colour of my future but the difference is that I do not need to hope for a golden future but look forward to it with confidence instead as God has promised through His unfailing Word. Therefore, I am certain that no matter what happens, my golden future is guaranteed and nothing can take it away. In this world, a fatal mistake made, a failure in life such as failing of exams, going to a less prominent school, committing a crime or going to jail will result in the categorization of you being a failure in life without much of a future, not to mention a golden one. However, with God, things are different. Come as you are, God always gives a second chance and a golden future in God is assured.
